AB - Purpose:This study was Conducfed to investigate the relationship between the health beliefs of those with life-style related diseases and the performance of healthy behaviors in a pre-hospitalized state.
Methods:This study was conducted using structured questionnaires. The subjects included 211 officers, commissioned and non-commissioned, who were hospitalized in three military medical facilities. Data about 76 questions were collected from Oct 31st. 2005 to Nov 10th. 2005. The
data were analyzed with SPSS 12.0 statistics program.
Results:
1. The average score of the subjects' health beliefs was 2.87 on a scale from 0 to 4, which means the majority of subjects had positive health beliefs.
2. In measuring the level of performance of healthy behaviors, seven beneficial behaviors were ascertained. Of these seven, the number of non-smokers(80.0%), those who maintained healthy alcohol drinking habits (87.1%), and those who maintained regular eating habits, specifically, breakfast (62.1%) showed satisfactory levels of healthy behavior performance. Compared to these subjects, those who reported exercising on regular basis(41.7%), getting 7-8 hours
of sleep per night(34.1%), and avoiding ingestion of snacks(19.4%) showed the poorest levels of performance.
3.There was a significant correlation between the health beliefs of the subject and the subject's performance of healthy behaviors, which showed that the higher the performance, the more positive the health belief.
CONCLUSION:The results of the study outline the need for the implementation of an organized health education program and the conduction of an appropriate method of nursing intervention in order to understand the relation between the health beliefs and the performance of healthy behaviors of future hospitalized officers. Furthermore it is needed to help officers perform healthy behaviors continuously while in the service and in their regional communities after discharge, evacuation, and retirement.
