AB - purpose:This study investigated non- commissioned officers (NCOs)in the Korean Army (ROK) and officers' level of understanding with regards to suicide and found a correlation between the NCOs' and officers' intentions to utilize a suicide prevention program and an interest in managing enlisted men. The study sampled85 officers who are hospitalized in military hospitals in non-front line areas. The survey was conducted from December 2nd 2005 to December 7th 2005. The major findings were as follows;
1. As a cause for suicides among younger soldiers (aged?), 44.7% of the respondents identified “an inadequate understanding of suicides rates.” To resolve suicide-related
problems, the in-service suicides need to be considered a structural problem and an adequate suicide-prevention measure needs to be implemented.
2.71.8% of the officers responded that they provided counseling for their men regarding personal issues, and 69.4% said that they attempted to have conversations with the enlisted men (on a regular basis?). This shows that majority of officers proactively sought ways in which they could help the men under their command.
3.14.1% of the officers actively and personally dealt with soldiers who displayed a high suicide probability, and 24.7% said such efforts increased work-related stress.
4.The intention to utilize a suicide prevention program and the interest in managing enlisted men showed a correlation of(r=.366, p<0.01).
Suicides in the Korean Army must be
considered a structural problem, rather than a medical one, and officers' proactive involvement in managing the issue is necessary. As an effective suicide-reduction measure, the high-ranking officers need to set up a team of specialists and promote a protective atmosphere for those at risk.
