AB - Purpose:This study was aimed at developing an orientation model in order to facilitate the transition of newly commissioned nursing officers into safe and independently operating nursing staffs in military hospitals. Methods:To develop the model, research proceeded in two phases-a preliminary and a developing phase. In the preliminary phase, investigation and comparison of three civilian hospitals' orientation models and pre-existing military hospital orientation programs were conducted in addition to comprehensive literature review regrading orientation. In the development phase, an orientation model was developed based on the results of the preliminary phase and a need assessment of the newly commissioned nursing officers. Results:1) C-Hospital in the U.S. adapted a Team-Preceptive Model, and S-Hospital and A-Hospital in Korea utilized a Preceptorship Model and a Blended Learning Models respectively. The components of C-Hospital's model were composed of newly graduated nurses, clinical educators, preceptors, staff development experts, and simulation coordinators. In the case of S-Hospital, the components included newly graduated nurses, clinical educators, unit managers, and preceptors. In the case of A-Hospital, the components included newly graduated nurses, team leaders, unit managers, charge nurses, preceptors, and clinical educators. In terms of the relations among each components, C-Hospital and A-Hospital used team-preceptorship and collaborative partnership approaches and the S-hospital took preceptorship and collaborative partnership approaches. 2) The results of the newly commissioned nursing officers' need assessment for orientation were categorized into educational contents, methods, systems, and educators. Based on the need assessment, preliminary investigation, and comprehensive literature review, the Collaborative Partnership Orientation Model(CPOM), which consists of newly commissioned nursing officers, a chief of the medical/surgical nursing department, an education officer, a unit charge nurse, and a preceptor was developed. The CPOM also identified each components' role and the relation among the components. The goal/objective of the orientation model, teaching strategies, and evaluation methods were suggested in this research.
