AB - Purpose:This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted to identify nursing officers' level of knowledge, competence and actual performance on cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Method:To measure the level of knowledge of, and competence in CPR, a structured questionnaire survey was used. The participants were 675 nursing officers. To determine the accuracy of CPR competence, 50 participants performed CPR. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression were used to analyze the data on the SPSS 12.0. Results:The level of the nursing officers' knowledge and competence for CPR was higher than the average and the level showed statistically significant differences in some of the general characteristics and education types. Correlation between knowledge and competence for CPR was r=.29. Factors affecting knowledge were ACLS competence, ER/OR experience and certifications. Factors affecting competence were total knowledge, work on wards, certifications and CPR experience. The quality of BLS actual performance was poor and there was no difference between the BLS performance accuracy and self-reported level of competence for CPR. Conclusion:In order to increase the level of knowledge of, and competence and accuracy in CPR, continuous education was found to be necessary. We also recommend that education systems include the BLS provider certification in their programs.
