ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to provide basic data to develop nursing intervention in dealing with internet usage problems by determining military personnel's adolescents' frequency of using the internet and thus examining family function and communication with parents. Method : The data was collected from 286 adolescents of military personnel, who were attending middle and high school in a province from September 3 - 17, 2010. The instruments used were the Internet Addiction Simplicity Scale, FaceⅢ(Family Adaptation and Cohesion Evaluation Scales), and PACI(Parent Adolescent Communication Inventory). Result : 23.4% of military personnels' adolescents were risky internet users. Family function showed 72.7 of the average score, which is comparatively high. And there was no difference between internet normal and risky users. In communication with the fathers, the average score of the risky internet users reached 59.1, less significant (p<.001) than that of the normal users indicating 72.1. In communication with the mothers, the indication was similar (p<.01). The predicted variable in internet use indicated 1.4 times of internet use was due to problematic communication. Conclusion : To reduce the number of risky internet users, it is necessary to develop and provide education and counselling programs for military personnel to help fathers effectively communicate with their children.
