ABSTRACT

Purpose : The purpose of the study was to survey health management behavior among North Korean refugees with a focus on living in North Korea and third countries. Methods : The data were collected from 124 North Korean refugees between October, 2014 and January, 2015. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results : 73.4% of the participants perceived their health status was acceptable and more, but their perception on their health status in third countries got worse. North Korean's primary health problems while living in North Korea were gastrointestinal symptoms and diseases. The most frequent response to illness was to get medicine at market places. Smoking and drinking rate was 33.6% and 40.7% each. Nutritional status in North Korea was poor and main health behavior was taking herbal tonics or nutritional supplement. The participants had almost no experience in taking health education in North Korea. Conclusion : North Korean defectors preferentially need education for health management to improve their health status.
