ABSTRACT

Purpose : This study is to examine sexual knowledge, sexual attitude, stress coping and resilience and their related factors of North Korean female defectors. Methods : The cross-sectional survey design was used with a convenient sample. Data was collected using a self-reported questionnaire from 131 North Korean female defectors who were recruited at the two Settlement Support Offices for Dislocation of North Koreans. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficient. Results : The mean scores of sexual knowledge, sexual attitude, stress coping and resilience were 0.58, 2.88, 1.41, 3.81 each. The related factors of sexual knowledge were number of countries one stayed before entering South Korea(F=6.56, p=.002), presence of a member of the Labor Party in one's family(t=2.66, p=.009), perceived need for sex education(t=-2.22, p=.028), experience of sex education in North Korea (t=2.79, p=.006), perceived need for sex education at home(t=2.83, p=.006). The related factors of stress coping were age group (F=3.88, p=.011), and usefulness of sex education in North Korean school(t=-2.11, p=.039). There were statistically significant positive relationships among sexual attitude and stress coping(r=.18, p=.035), sexual attitude and resilience(r=.27, p=.005), stress coping and resilience (r=.65, p<001). Conclusion : The findings in this study showed that North Korean female defectors are in need of customized sex education and health care service based on their characteristics including age, stress coping and resilience.
