Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe ROK nursing officers' smallpox vaccination experiences. Methods: The experiences were explored through in-depth interview with 12 nursing officers who got vaccinated smallpox. The data were analyzed with phenomenological methods of Colaizzi. Results: In this study, 29 themes and 11 theme clusters were extracted and these were clustered into 4 main categories: ‘Complex perceptions related to supporting the vaccination of the smallpox’, ‘A new experience different from the known vaccination’, ‘Difficult management due to various body reactions’, and ‘Preparedness as a nursing officer with readiness. Conclusion: The study results showed a fundamental understanding of smallpox vaccination experience of ROK nursing officers. It is necessary to enhance awareness of smallpox vaccination as well as needs for vaccination among first responders and military medical personnel.
