ABSTRACT

Purpose: The purpose of the study was (1) to determine the knowledge level (current status) and the importance level (desired status) of disaster nursing educational contents and teaching methods and (2) to identify the priority of them among nursing faculties. Methods: A structured questionnaire based on Core Competencies in Disaster Nursing Model by International Council of Nurses (ICN) was conducted among 52 nursing faculties who were employed in educational institutions and had experience in teaching disaster nursing programs. The data were collected through Online from October to November 2021 and analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired t-test. The Borich’s Needs Assessment Model and the Locus for Focus Model were also implemented. Results: Significant differences were found in scores on ‘importance level (desired status)’ and ‘the knowledge levels (current status)’ on all eight domains of disaster nursing educational contents based on ICN model. Deriving the priority of educational needs using the Borich needs assessment model and the Locus of Focus model revealed that the ‘preparation and planning’ and ‘incident management’ on educational contents were top priorities; ‘Mock drill’ was the top priority on teaching methods. Conclusion: The present results can be used as basic data for developing disaster nursing educational programs for nursing faculties that reflects their needs.
