ABSTRACT

Purpose: This study aimed to explore patient care experiences of rehabilitation ward nurses in depth to understand their meaning and essence. Methods: Data were collected through individual in-depth interviews with nurses who had cared for rehabilitation patients for more than 3 years in a general hospital. Data analysis was conducted using Colaizzi's phenomenological data analysis. Results: From the experiences of nurses caring for rehabilitation patients in general hospitals, 70 essential meanings were extracted. They were reread several times and then grouped and categorized with similar contents, resulting in 10 meaningful themes. Finally, four categories were derived from the themes: 'Difficulties in establishing a rehabilitation nursing identity', 'differentiated competencies required as rehabilitation nurses', 'empathy and understanding of rehabilitation patients and their families', and 'defining the role as experts of rehabilitation nursing'. Conclusions: Nurses caring for patients in rehabilitation wards have more diverse and numerous tasks, but they felt that they were not recognized and were burdened. However, their pursuit of professionalism and unique rehabilitation nursing can enable them to better care for and understand the situation of long-term patients. Therefore, shaping the unique field of rehabilitation nursing is necessary by analyzing the tasks of rehabilitation nursing and developing educational programs for each nurse's career.
