ABSTRACT

Purpose: This study aimed to examine how resilience and sleep quality influence rehabilitation motivation among post-surgical orthopedic patients in a military hospital. Method: This descriptive cross-sectional study included 119 post-surgical patients from an orthopedic ward at a military hospital located in region D, South Korea. Data were collected using structured questionnaires, including the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and rehabilitation motivation scale. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, t-tests, Pearson‘s correlation, and multiple regression using the SPSS program. Results: The mean resilience score was 2.93±0.60 (out of 4), and the mean sleep quality score was 0.88±0.48 (out of 3). Rehabilitation motivation averaged 3.96±0.48 (out of 5). Resilience showed a significant positive correlation with rehabilitation motivation (r=.57, p<.001), but sleep quality did not show a significant relationship with rehabilitation motivation (r=-.09, p=.316). The multiple regression analysis indicated that resilience (β=0.50, p<.001) was a significant predictor of rehabilitation motivation, whereas sleep quality was not (β=-0.11, p=.915). Conclusion: Resilience emerged as a significant predictor of the rehabilitation motivation among military hospital orthopedic patients, while sleep quality showed no significant effect. Tailored interventions to enhance the resilience of such patients should be developed and implemented to improve their rehabilitation outcomes and support recovery. Further studies are recommended to explore the indirect effects of sleep quality on rehabilitation motivation in various contexts.
