ABSTRACT

Purpose: This paper aims to identify the concept of nurses’ acuity. Methods: The Walker and Avant method of concept analysis was used. The attributes and definition of nurses’ acuity were derived through a comprehensive literature review. Results: The defining attributes of nurses’ acuity include cognitive sensitivity, intuitive judgment, proactive responsiveness, adaptive flexibility, and professional responsibility. Based on the concept analysis, the antecedents of nurses’ acuity were identified as experience, organizational collaboration and support, resource availability, and learning and education. The consequences, therefore, include an improvement in patient outcomes, enhanced nursing competence and quality of care, and increased job satisfaction. Conclusion: This research contributes to standardizing concept utilization through shared understanding and facilitating seamless communication across research, educational, and clinical environments. Nurses’ acuity is recognized as a potential capability that contributes to positive caregiving outcomes. The operationalization of nurses’ acuity varies by investigator. Results of this study indicate that positive outcomes associated with nurses’ acuity may significantly enhance through appropriate and timely interventions for complex patients.
