ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the changes in craft materials in the context of the Anthropocene and recent technological environments through the relationship between the artificial, human, and nature. With the advancement of technology, the range of traditional craft materials has expanded and transformed, requiring a multifaceted interpretation that considers not only the final product but also the production process. In her project Craft in the Anthropocene, craft artist Yesenia Thibault-Picazo explores the impact of humanity on Earth's natural substances and creates new materials with “geomimicry,” reflecting the influence of the Anthropocene and future geology. Craft works using artificially created materials in this way expand the scope and context of materials and explore their properties and relationships with society, technology, and the environment. Moreover, this change demonstrates that craft can function as a vital medium for conveying social messages and seeking a sustainable future by considering social and environmental interactions. Thus, by responding to advanced technologies and environmental changes, craft in the Anthropocene era investigates the processes of material creation and transformation and expands the role and value of craft in contemporary society and artistic discourse.
