ABSTRACT

This article examines how the discourse of the Anthropocene is constituted and critically rearticulated within the domain of contemporary art. The recent decision by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) to reject its formal designation as a geological epoch has catalyzed a paradigmatic shift from a stratigraphic unit (chron or series) to an “event.” This narrative transition appears in contemporary exhibition practices in sensory immersion, institutional critique, and speculative ontology. The study foregrounds the philosophical interventions of Bruno Latour and Nicolas Bourriaud, especially their efforts to translate theoretical insights into curatorial methodologies. This article analyzes a range of Anthropocene-related exhibitions, building on their intellectual legacy with three curatorial frameworks: immaterial curating, narrative curating, and spatial curating. Also, particular attention focuses on Aerocene Seoul and its associated forum, a hybrid platform for artistic practice and public discourse. This case exemplifies how the Anthropocene is visualized and critically contested, and reconfigures the discourse through the semiotic and institutional apparatus of art. In conclusion, the article argues that contemporary art actively reconstitutes the epistemological and ontological boundaries of the Anthropocene and fosters a renewed critical sensibility at the intersection of aesthetics, science, and politics.
