AB - This study investigates the formation and significance of surreal space in contemporary Chesekhwa (Korean color painting) after the Liberation period. Grounded in André Breton’s concept of Surréalism, it examines how the visualization of the unconscious and ‘dépaysement’-like juxtapositions have evolved in contemporary Chesekhwa. By analyzing works by Chun Kyungja, Park Saengkwang, Oh Nangja, Lee Whaja, Ahn Seongmin, Kwon Inkyung, Lee Jinju, Sung Min Woo, Na Hyung-Min, and Kwak Su Yeon, the research interprets their approaches to spatial composition and the aesthetic meanings embedded within.
While Chun Kyungja visualized her inner narratives and unconscious sentiments with fantastical imagery, subsequent generations expanded this practice by juxtaposing reality, memory, and symbolism to create new pictorial realms. These compositions parallel Surrealist automatism yet inherit a multi-perspectival structure and ‘yeobaek’ (aesthetics of void) from traditional Chesekhwa. The study argues that such surreal spaces signify not a mere adaptation of Western avant-garde idioms, but are a modern reinterpretation of Korea’s traditional utopian imagination. Ultimately, Chesekhwa operates as an “interstitial space” where tradition and modernity, Korea and West, intersect and embodies a unique aesthetic language that redefines the identity and contemporaneity of Korean art.
