ABSTRACT

This article focuses on defining “multispecies architecture” by examining the intersection between architecture and ethology. To this end, it conducts three sub-studies. First, the article outlines the relationship between architecture and animals in an architectural context. It examines selected examples from the history of architecture, from ancient Greece to the present. Second, it outlines Vincian Despret’s philosophical ethology by focusing on her exploration of birds. She argues that while one can observe birds and create narratives, it is difficult to “accurately” understand the reasons behind their specific behaviors. This is due to cognitive and emotional blind spots. While this may be a limitation in the practice of solidarity and care, it serves as a crucial turning point in the context of loose togetherness. Third, it analyzes the work of the Feral Partnership and attempts to read it through Despret’s ethology. While their work offers promise in that it transcends conventional architectural thinking and sparks public debate, it also presents limitations such as the recurring use of terms like “care” in an anthropocentric way, as well as the lack of sufficient consideration of the role of architecture in that context. By critically reviewing the possibilities and limitations of the Feral Partnership through Despret’s ethology and beyond, this article seeks a more elaborately designed, multi-species narrative, thereby proposing an “open architecture” as an alternative form of debate.
