ABSTRACT

This paper examines Folke Köbberling‘s interventions in public space with Chantal Mouffe's theory of “agonistic pluralism.” Mouffe argues public space as a space of “agonistic” conflict, where opposing hegemonies clash, and defines artistic practices that intervene in these hegemonic struggles as critical art. Folke Köbberling resists urban consumer capitalism and authoritarian hegemony with temporary interventions using architectural and sculptural structures. Her practice reconfigures public space as a site of conflict and debate by stimulating the participation and collective action of those excluded from the existing order. Köbbering’s activist artistic practice, which exposes the inherent conflicts within public space and employs strategies of “dissensus,” is noteworthy as a critical art example that vividly exemplifies Mouffe‘s concept of “agonistic public space” and its aesthetics.
