ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is consider the popularity technique of Lee, Man-Hui's dramaturgy. He started on writing in 1990's. In 1990's, the image media grow rapidly and the theater is on the decrease relatively. So the theatrical people attempt variety of method to draw spectators to theater at that time. In this depressed theatrical world, Lee, Man-Hui wrote 'the theater of the dialogue' and his works made a great success of arousing a spectator's sympathy. His works were performed for long time and reruned again and again. - It's rare case in Korea theatrical world. And at last he became a box-office writer. His works are not difficult, but his works have a power to make spectators think the life. His anguish about works and performance is connected to the agony about the spectators - Lee, Man-Hui thought that the spectators demand something delicate and make them feel a lump in throat. As a result of this anguish, his popularity technique is reflected in his works as below. The first, 'The reflect upon of emotion' reflecting on one's conduct going back to the former status of ruin. The second, 'The sense of detail' awakening ordinary experience and universal emotion. The third, 'The amusement of dramatic words' being embodied the way of speaking at a distance or reading to people. The fourth, 'The dramatic curiosity' which is satisfied with using the technique of the other self in the inner world. These popularity techniques are used in movie scenarios as well as dramatic performances. I came to the conclusion considering the popularity technique of Lee, Man-Hui's dramaturgy, it is necessary that we have to turn the consciousness about 'Popularity' and 'Beauty of art'. 'Popularity' is regarded the same thing as 'Beauty of art' in the period of rapid change cultural industry. I make an end of this study feeling keenly the necessity of systematic discussion about 'Popularity'.
