AB - This thesis intends to find the ‘nation’ discourse expressed in Twilight written by Song Young during the Liberation period. The most popular and influential word at that time was above all, 'nation'. Therefore, during the Liberation period, both the leftists and the rightists had a severe discourse fighting to persuade the people that they were more worthy than the other of the term, 'nation'. In this kind of discourse struggle, literature or art may be the most effective instrument. The Twilight by Song Young was the work that revealed the 'nation' discourse of the leftists most profoundly.
Song Young made three layers of the concept, 'nation'. First is the indiscriminate union, second is the 'people' in the leftists' meaning, third, the union of the conscious people. He used these three to present the concept which he considered to be the real one. For this, he had a special strategy in representation. First, he made typical characters that corresponded to each concept. They are the pro-Japanese, the leftist, and the activist for independence. Second, he used the various tones of voices for characters. He provided the sarcastic tone for the pro-Japanese, an enlightening tone, for the leftist, and for the activist, tone of sympathy. Through all these, the writer wanted to suggest the second concept to be the real one. And he made a binary between the first concept and the second, and a third one to get a special ideological effect. Through the articulation of the leftist and the activist for independence, he tried to easily hide the pro-Japanese career of the leftists and to take the moral justification. And he wanted to construct the nation centered round leftists.
