ABSTRACT

This study on the mechanism of rhetorical effects in Kim Su-hyun’s drama Mal-Hee seeks to analyze and examine both the main character from the drama and each rhetorical situation through ‘inventio’ and ‘dispositio’ that are based on rhetorical theory. The aims of this study are as follows. First of all, this study clarifies the structural suitability between ‘inventio’ and ‘dispositio’ in the text. Next, it examines the effects as the result of the suitability between ‘inventio’ and ‘dispositio’. For the last, it lays groundwork for the research of ‘elocutio’ in drama Mal-Hee. This can be an unprecedented approach for rhetorical understanding of Kim Su-hyun's drama as well as research methodology about TV drama as a popular narrative text. According to the result of this study, the defect of the opposition in ‘inventio’ of character Mal-Hee is solved by dividing ‘dispositio’. This aspect makes drama Mal-Hee reflect social and cultural situation and the desire of audience at that time. The purposes of each rhetorical situation-‘narrative and character set-up’, ‘Hwa-kuk(話劇, the play-genre based on speech rather than gesture)’s effects' and ‘narrative's conversion and ‘inventio’ intention's arousal’-are successfully completed by matching ‘inventio’ and ‘dispositio’. In short, it means this; the drama, Mal-Hee acquires structural suitability, and represent the required ‘effects’ in each rhetoric condition through choosing the relevant arranging strategy for ‘inventio’.
