AB - This article begins with a question why the Korean-oriented musical in the field of original Korean musical has been forced to be created from the beginning. The Korean musical history shows that the origin of the compulsion is based on the competition with North-Korea as well as the West for the cultural authenticity. The images of ‘Seoul’ in the original Korean musical can be said the field showing the competition with the West.
In the original Korean musicals, Seoul is represented the place of ‘exhibition’, ‘segment’ and ‘suppression’. Seoul as the place of exhibition and segment is created by established musical companies and Seoul as the place of suppression, by contrast, is by non-established ones. Especially, the image of ‘exhibited Seoul’ is invented by the governmental musical companies which internalizes the nationalism ideology. Hence, in this context, they emphasize on the civilization and culture of Seoul are the essential elements of constructing a nation-state. This notion almost unconsciousnessly combines with fantasy. The image of ‘segmented Seoul’ is represented by the established private companies. In this Seoul, ruptures due to the class and the region are included but are treated as the lack of archetypical locality. This means that the urban culture of Seoul is considered as decadent trend and Seoul has to be broke away from that. The image of ‘suppressing Seoul’ is connected to the view of realism for handling Seoul. Oddly corpulent Seoul is not only represented as the symbol of evil, but also alienates the common people and workers.
