The way of organizing the history as potentiality into the drama : on TV drama Daejanggum

ABSTRACT

This essay tried to inquire into the way and the aesthetics of organizing the history as the potentiality, on the features of the micro-cultural history in TV drama Daejanggum. Among the historical dramas which produced variously since 2000, Daejanggum is characteristic in that it doesn't focus on the macro-history on the basis of written records, but on the minor histories. Thus, this essay discussed how the minor histories in Daejanggum were related to the structure of TV drama. Daejanggum embodies the history as the potentiality, reorganizing the cultural history of those days from the clue found in the little records of the Annals of Joseon Dynasty. And describing the various classes' lives around Janggum, the court ladies' lives and the lady doctors' discipline in detail, it offers the viewpoint in which the history was understood as the synthetic relation system through the concrete individual. The micro-historical features like that support the completeness of Daejanggum, related closely to the synthetic structure of TV drama. The repetitions of structures in particular episodes and greater narrative units, the repetitions of dramatic purposes which lead the Janggum's acts, and the repetitions of affairs and scenes etc. show how this drama's structure acquires the secondary orality of TV drama. The viewers understand the serial structure of drama wholly through the repetitions of synthetic organizations, and anticipate the next episode through the strategic suspension. Daejanggum describes the course through which a woman character, Janggum struggles to perfect the self, and accomplish the higher levels in relation to the various characters. Janggum obtains the position of ‘eccezione normale’ and rises to the protagonist of new-type historical drama. herewith. Like that, Daejanggum shows the way how the history as potentiality can be organized into the TV drama, by giving the concrete individual's shape in the historical flow to the historical latent individual.
