ABSTRACT

The purpose of this article is to evaluate the elements of Oh Taesuk’s “Teum (an opening) creation” and its affect upon the aesthetic value of the play Yonghosangbak. The “Teum” is an opened space produced by the imagination of spectators. The spectators can viscerally experience the aesthetic meaning of the Teum. Oh creates the Teum by cracking well-made structures and intentionally emptying space on the stage to in order to cause the spectators to take part in the play. I extracted four elements of Oh’s “Teum creation” from his essays and then examined Yonghosangbak based on these concepts. The first element is omitting something from the stiry; there may be a leap in the scenes and plotline. The second feature is having the characters engage is useless actions. The third component is setting up useless open spaces on stage. The last element is directing that actors to see the spectators. I found that Oh created Teums using useless/unnecessary actions which produced a space that the spectators then filled with reflections about life and viability. By studying Yonghosangbak, I discovered three kinds of Teums. I found a Teum in the Bumgoot(an exercism), Bumereun’s needleless actions and Yongwhang’s space in the stage. There permeated the spectators’ imaginations: various kinds of voices and associated things in the ‘Teum’. To sum up, Oh’s ‘Teum creation’ is based upon invoking a sense of “emptiness” then “filling” in the audience, which is one of the primary principles of Korea Traditional Performances. The aesthetic value of the Teums in Yonghosangbak is to revive the lost hope and the things that were forgotten at the advent of the material civilization: to think with an open mind, to end oppositional attitudes and conflict, and to experience viability which is to keep one’s life and to respect others.
