ABSTRACT

A music drama(Ak-gŭk) had been played with various types from 1920’s to mid 1950’s and it was a genre which had highly been enjoyed by the audience. This study is designed to examine and analyze the initial works on the stage of “Swan Opera Company(Baek-jo gageuk-dan)” including <One Night at the Harbor> and <Snowy Nights>. These two works were created several times in the order of phonographic record, a Music drama(Ak-gŭk) and movies for 20 years from 1930’s to the end of 1950’s. The repertories of “Swan Opera company(Baek-jo gageuk-dan)” started from gramophone dramatization, which shows one flow of Music drama(Ak-gŭk) based on popular songs. <One Night at the Harbor> showed one type of music drama(Ak-gŭk) which promotes popular songs. <Snowy Nights> was made based on <Punished Mother> which dramatized Yamamoto Yuzo's <Infanticide> and this could be told to be a type that used a family tragedy as a material of a Music drama(Ak-gŭk). “Swan Opera Company” was mostly played with the names of a compassion tragedy and a tragic opera. <One Night at the Harbor> described a wife’s sacrifice for her husband and <Snowy Nights> described a mother’s agony, and these works emotionally described women’s agonies during the period of men’s absence and accordingly gained much popularity. Theme songs of two music dramas(Ak-gŭk) last about one minute and function as telling about the start and the end of the opera. Theme songs have the lyrics which summarized the entire opera and reflected the musical scales of popular songs as much as possible. In the operas of “Swan Opera Company(Baek-jo gageuk-dan)”, actors didn’t sing a song. Songs created the atmospheres and there were special individual singers. This shows some implications in that several popular songs are inserted during the intermission. <One Night at the Harbor> and <Snowy Nights> are the representative works of “Swan Opera company”, and considering the formation process, the application of songs and the subjects, it shows one type of operetta which uses popular songs.
