ABSTRACT

“Dongyang Geukjang(Oriental Theatre)”, one of the television drama series deals with puplic theaters and entertainers from the 1930s to 1948. It has distinct characteristics from those of historical drama series in 2000s in a subject matter and an approach. Dongyang Geukjang calls out romantically the daily lives of the entertainers who lived a life in a modernized space. The series portray selectively and intensively spaces, occupational views, real episodes, and characters’ viewpoints to enhance the stature of entertainers which did not have a concern dramatically. Also, Dongyang Geukjang makes use of such techniques as a play within a play, subtitles, pothos, black-and-white images, a narration in order to emphasize a reality of the walk of mass entertainment. These audiovisual technologies is a strategical tool to gain some objectivity, but still sometimes glamorize facts or interrupt the audience’s involvement. What we can confirm from the form and the content of Dongyang Geukjang is to try to make an audience recognize daily lives of the walk of mass entertainment as a part of history. This is an remarkably pioneering trial to push the boundaries of historical drama. However, This drama has a limit of not incorporating the story organically, trying to give excessive finality and significance. The reason why it failed to make an audience notice such an effort is an unfamiliarity of the approach. However, Dongyang Geukjang has a significance that the drama is a work that tried to actively approach individuals’ life and private spaces, which had not emerged in historical drama on TV, and became a starting point to deal with a microscopic daily life.
