AB - 박현숙의 희곡 <사랑을 찾아서>(『조선일보』, 1960.1.13~1.28)는 남과 북을 세 번 월경한 주인공 정애리와 사상을 회의하는 인민군 오영식을 중심으로 체제 ‘월경’에 대한 공포와 ‘전향’의 억압을 극화한다. 정애리의 월경 동인인 ‘순수한 사랑’은 자기 보존의 욕망, ‘생존’을 위한 욕망과 이어진다. 국가체제의 폭력, 내적 자유의 억압, 체제의 전향 강요에 대한 비판적 의식은 월경인 정애리와 경계인 오영식에게 가해지는 체제의 폭력을 다룬 4장부터 심화된다. 1장과 5장에 배치된 법정 장면에서, ‘월경인’ 정애리는 체제에 의해 잠재적 ‘죄인’으로 다루어지며 민규, 민 변호사와 같은 ‘국민’과 차별된다. 정애리는 법정에서 사상의 ‘자유’와 내적 가치로서의 ‘비밀’을 지키기 위한 ‘침묵’을 전개한다. 법정 장면을 통해 작품은 50년대 남한의 전향체제를 환기한다. ‘국가체제-국민-월경인’의 위상은 무대공간에서 감시, 주시의 공간으로 설정된 재판정의 배치를 통해 가시화된다. 이를 통해 작품은 1950년대 남한 사회가 월경과 전향 사이의 ‘자유’의 조건을 갖추었는가 국민과 월경인의 구도를 통해 비판적으로 묻는다.
4장에서는 작가의 자전적 기록과 구술자료를 검토하며 텍스트 창작과 개작 과정에 반영된 작가의 월북, 월남 체험을 살펴보고, <여수>(1965)로 개작되는 과정을 다루었다. <사랑을 찾아서>의 경우 월경 체험과 반공주의적 이데올로기는 긴장 관계에 놓여 있는데, 5년 후의 <여수>에 이르러 이러한 긴장 관계는 허물어지며 반공주의 이데올로기의 요소가 강화된다. 이는 제3공화국 시기 반공주의 이데올로기가 강화되는 사회적 맥락과 함께 반공주의와 월남의 체험 사이에서 유동하는 월남 작가의 내면과 텍스트의 연관성을 분석해야 할 연구사적 과제를 제기한다.
