AB - 이 논문은 카프 연극의 노선에 충실한 작가였던 김영팔이 <대학생>에서부터 변화를 선택하는 이유를 톨러의 표현주의극 <힌케만>과 관련해서 설명하고 있다. 톨러는 <힌케만>에서 독일혁명의 실패 원인을 프롤레타리아 대중의 행동방식에서 찾았다. 극에서 문제 삼는 것은 프롤레타리아 내부의 갈등과 분열로, 아내와 동료들에 의해 힌케만의 영혼이 완전히 파괴되는 것을 보여준다. 톨러는 현실의 문제해결을 가로막는 것으로 계층 간의 갈등보다 노동자 내부에 있다고 보았으며, 인간들 내부의 욕망으로 인해 문제가 생겨나는 것을 포착하였다. 김영팔의 <대학생>은 기득권층의 부정적 속성을 관객과 함께 조소하는 방식이지만, <힌케만>이 언급되면서 개인적으로나 사회적으로 변화를 기대할 수 없는 시대에 대한 인식으로 이어지게 된다. 카프 소속 연극인인 김영팔의 톨러에 대한 관심은 톨러와 마찬가지로 노동자와의 연대를 통해 현실을 바꿀 수 있다는 기대가 흐려졌다는 것을 드러낸다. <대학생> 이후의 작품이 현실에서 더욱 멀어지게 되는 것도 이러한 변화의 맥락에서 이해할 수 있다.
