AB - 이 서평은, 식민지기 프롤레타리아 문학의 시인이자 평론가로서 활약한 임화(본명 임인식, 1908-1953?)가 남긴 영화와 관련된 글들에 관해 분석한 백문임 교수의 저작 『임화의 영화』(소명출판, 2015)에 대해서 검토한 글이다. 임화가 영화론을 발표한 것은 크게 두 시기로 나눠서 볼 수 있다. 첫 번째 시기는 1920년대 말 그가 도쿄에 유학가기 전후에 발표한 프롤레타리아 영화에 관한 평론들이다. 두 번째 시기는 1940년대 초로 조선영화의 역사를 회고한 「조선영화발달소사」(1941)와 「조선영화론」(1941), 영화 <복지만리>(1941)에 대해서 논한 「영화의 극성과 기록성」(1942) 등, 중요한 영화론과 영화평론을 남기고 있다. 이 책은 그러한 임화의 영화론의 구조와 시대적 맥락에 대한 자세한 분석을 통해 그의 영화론을 검토하는 토대적인 작업으로 크게 공헌하고 있다. 이 서평은 이 책의 가치를 충분히 인정하면서 여기서의 검토가 앞으로 이 분야의 연구를 어떻게 전개해 나갈 수 있는지, 그 가능성에 대한 몇 가지 예시를 했다. 그리고 이 책 권말에 수록된 자료편은 이 책의 또 하나의 중요한 핵심을 이루는 부분으로, 이 책의 본론에서 언급된 글을 포함하여 임화의 영화평론들이 수록되어 있다. 전집에 수록되지 않은 임화의 영화론을 이 책에서 모두 볼 수 있게 된 것은 실로 환영할 만한 일이라고 할 수 있다.
