AB - 『한국연극과 드라마투르기』는 한국연극사에서 드라마투르기의 뿌리와 흔적을 찾아내고 그 현황과 비전을 제시하는 책이다. 저자는 10여 년 간 고군분투한 자신의 경험을 토대로 한국적인 맥락에서 드라마투르기 역할을 설정하고자 한다.
저자는 한국연극에서 드라마투르기의 전사(前史)를 근대극 시기와 현대극 시기에서 찾는다. 1930년대 극단의 문예부나 연구회에서 작가 육성과 창작극 생산에 노력한 것, 60년대 드라마센터 극작 워크숍이 박조열, 노경식, 이강백 등의 작가를 길러낸 것을 두 전사로 꼽는다. 또 드라마투르기가 본격적으로 한국에 수용되는 시기를 90년대로 보았다. 1991년 국립극단에서 김창화가 극작술연구가로 그 개념을 소개하고, 1996년 김미희가 <날 보러 와요>에서 프로덕션 드라마투르기 작업으로 한국연극의 드라마투르기를 본격적으로 시작했다고 평가했다. 2000년대 이후 제작극장 시대의 도래로 드라마투르기의 활동이 확산되었다고 보았으며, 특히 공공극장의 경우 창작극 개발과 육성을 위해 드라마투르그의 도입이 절실하다고 주장한다.
이 책은 그동안 외국 이론이나 방법론의 단편적인 소개에 그쳤던 국내의 드라마투르기 담론을 주체적이고 역사적인 논의로 확대했다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 드라마투르기적인 인식과 사고가 예술의 모든 창작과정으로 다양하게 확산되는 현 시점에서 여전히 개발 드라마투르기 육성에 방점을 두고 있다는 아쉬움도 있지만, 21세기 한국연극의 소통 통로로서 그 존재와 전문화의 필요성을 한국연극사의 맥락에서 설득력 있게 풀어냈다.
