ABSTRACT

In the midst of the increase of historical storytelling, Imjin War 1592 televised on KBS 1TV appeared as a project which emphasized ‘historical facts’, claiming to be a ‘factual drama.’ Examining the process of planning, production and distribution of this drama, this paper tries to draw singularity of Imjin War 1592 and considers strategies of current Korean historical dramas as well as their echoes. Imjin War 1592, a Korea-China joint venture drama is based on historical records and related researches. The production crew stresses historical factuality of this drama naming these stylistic characteristics as ‘factual drama.’ Actually in this drama, intention to present historical facts by the style of documentary stands out more than the drama that develops the story by the dramatic plot. And this drama imparts a new meaning to Imjin War as the first international war occurred in East Asia. Accordingly, this drama has distinct position among other dramas treating Imjin War by additional historical facts from China who co-produces the drama. Historical dramas are not still free from historical research, distortion of facts, and discussion about probability and reality between 'history' and 'drama'. ‘Factual drama’ that Imjin War 1592 suggests newly in Korea is an attempt to emphasize historical facts more than fictional dramas. Achievement and limit of Imjin War 1592 are an example which indicates the present state of Korean historical dramas floating between the antagonistic relationship of fact and imagination.
