AB - 백현미의 『근대 극장의 여자들』은 근대 극장의 여성 연기자와 공연 문화의 역동성에 주목한 연구서이다. 이 책은 극장이라는 근대의 공간에서 새로운 근대 주체로서 ‘여성 연기자’의 탄생, 그들의 연기를 통해 주조된 낯설고도 친숙한 인간 유형들, 여성 공연단체의 활동과 그들의 존재를 둘러싼 사회적 소란들을 함께 펼쳐놓는다. 이를 통해 이 책은 20세기 공연 문화사를 통틀어 소위 ‘여성다움’의 덕목이나 섹슈얼리티를 전면화한 극 양식들이 어떠한 사회문화적 맥락과 대중적 감수성을 바탕으로 생산되었는지, 그리고 어떠한 지점에서 역사적 연속과 불연속을 보이고 있는지를 재고하는 계기를 마련해준다. 책 전체를 통틀어 저자는 특정한 극 양식을 생산하는 구조적 조건, 그리고 외래의 것들을 번역하고 이질적인 것들을 혼종하는 창조적 과정에 관심을 기울이고 있으며, 그동안 공연사 연구에서 주변화되었던 스테이지 쇼와 여성국극에 대해서도 집중적으로 조명하고 있다. 한국 공연 문화사에서 여성 연기자의 섹슈얼리티와 젠더 퍼포먼스와 관련해 많은 영감을 주는 이 책의 성과는 앞으로 동아시아 비교 문화 연구 등을 통해 확대 심화될 수 있으리라 기대한다.
