ABSTRACT

The paper focuses on how Yi, Sunsin, who frequently appears on novels and historical dramas, was recreated and illustrated in KBS drama saga Bulmyeolui Yi Sunsin. Consumption of historical dramas is an universal desire of human to understand the current life and establish order throughout history. The power of existence of historical dramas comes from the consciousness that human beings are the subjects of history. The paper also focuses on how the image of Yi, Sunsin communicates with the public and how historical dramas are related to social phenomena. The paper seeks its meaning as a review of how historical events were reproduced as the drama Bulmyeolui Yi Sunsin and how the drama communicates with the today’s public. Yi Sunsin was featured as main character three times and twice as supporting roles in the historical dramas. Yi Sunsin, by popular desire, was constantly brought to the present for repeated recreates, from the description of the text to the visualization of the dramas. Bulmyeolui Yi Sunsin moved through time and space, expanding the list of events and figures therefore having 104 episodes. The drama begins with the Battle of Noryang, the last battle of the Imjin War, to avoid the sequential epic structure of events and time, and to best highlight Yi's 'heroism' and 'human suffering’. Bulmyeolui Yi Sunsin drama featured the historical character Yi Soon Shin as an unshakable general with strict military discipline. On the other hand, Yi Sunsin symbolically revealed that he was the father of the benevolent Joseon Dynasty against its strictness as a fundamentalist.
