AB - Intercultural Theater refers to an experimental theater movement based on acceptance and communication between cultures. It began in earnest in the west during the 1960s and gradually spread around the world. Changgeuk Medea(창극 <메디아>) is the first attempt to achieve " the Changgeolization(창극화) of Greek Tragedy" with the aim of the "globalization of Changgeuk.” The purpose of this study is to find why four crimes associated with Medea, only briefly mentioned in the original story, were embodied in concrete scenes as they were adapted into Changgeuk Medea. The analysis is conducted according to the time sequence of crimes, but the discussion is divided into the changes of character type as revealed in the content, and the reinterpretations of character behaviors highlighted in the form. While imputing her brother's murder to Iason, Changgeuk Medea embodies Medea as an innocent ‘accomplice’ and ‘victim’ of this murder, and transforms Medea's revenge for an individual into a more just revenge for her family. In the story of the killing of her ‘uncle-in-law’, the outward expression of Medea’s guilt and the fact that she is not evil by nature are discussed. The revelation of the new “truths” of earlier crimes provides Medea with sufficient justification for exacting vengeance on her enemies, and she executes it via sorcery upon instigation by God. Regarding the filicide in the story, Changgeuk Medea has interpreted it in a new direction, in this case as a purification ceremony performed for the children through the implementation of ritual act. This study analyzes how the adaptation of Changgeuk Medea was accomplished within the framework of intercultural Changgeuk, the goal of which is globalization. The main purpose of the study is to examine the influence of various aspects of the sociocultural background, such as the social and cultural aspects, national morality, and the national aesthetic psychology of the culture to which the adapter of Changgeuk Medea and its audience belong.
