AB - This paper focuses on a new reading of Kim Young-pal's Gopjangkal in the discourse context of the hyeongpyeong movement. Gopjangkal is a work about the butcher's struggle for recognition, and it has been regarded as a representative proletarian play of the 1920s that reflects Kim Young-pal'`s class consciousness most faithfully. This evaluation presupposes the view of the butcher as a representative representation of the proletariat. However, analyzing the hyeongpyeong movement of the time, it was hard to say that hyeongpyeongsa was a homogeneous group, and the workers and peasants who were the core of the proletariat were in constant conflict with the butchers. concurrently, as the internal direction of the socialist movement sprouted within the hyeongpyeong movement, and socialist groups also strongly revealed their move to unite with the hyeongpyeong movement, incorporating the butchers into the fence of the proletariat could have emerged as a major task. For Kim Young-pal, who faced resistance from within the KAPF under suspicion of his ideological toughness, the literary embodiment of the issue of butcher must have been considered an attractive subject of creation. However, the method of historical drama he took revealed a clear limitation in that it merely romanticizes and sutured the actual conflict surrounding the butchers in the vague time and space of the past.
