ABSTRACT

The web drama Dramaworld is a meta-text that represents the way global fandoms enjoy the world of K-drama according to fanfictional principles. Dramaworld has been discussed as 'Korean-English bilingual global web content for K-drama' since the release of Season 1 in 2016, but its fanfictional dimension has not been paid attention in earnest. This paper considers the acceptance environment that K-dramas are widely loved as original sources in the field of overseas fanfiction creation and distribution, and focuses on fanfiction-like structure of Dramaworld. Dramaworld is a fanfictional text with a narrative-generating structure of ‘Otherworld Journey’. In addition, the media characteristics that are uniquely expressed in the fandom performance of live-action films and TV shows, so-called ‘2.5D’, are meta-represented through the crossover of the alternative universes that is main principle of fanfiction. Season 2 of Dramaworld explores these issues more deeply, interrogating the issues of gender politics that were overlooked in Season 1. Through its analysis, this paper tried to examine the meaning of Dramaworld as a text that contemplates how politics in the world of database consumption is possible.
