AB - 『라디오 연극 키네마: 식민지 지식인 최승일의 삶과 생각』은 좌파 문인으로 출발하여 라디오, 영화계에서 활동하였던 최승일의 생애사를 ‘미디어 사회문화사’와 ‘식민지 인텔리겐치아 전기’의 방식을 통해 확장적으로 다룬 연구서이다. 이를 통해 1920-40년대 라디오, 연극, 영화계를 중심으로 한 미디어 문화사의 미세한 정경과 최승일과 근거리에 있었던 일군의 식민지 지식인 집단의 역학이 최승일의 생애사 속에서 포착된다. 서평은 이 책의 장별 주요 논점을 살펴보면서, 일제강점기 대중문화계 전반에 종사하면서도 소위 ‘팔방미인’으로의 폄훼 속에서 제대로 평가될 수 없었던 ‘매개자’, ‘기획자’의 재조명이라는 일제강점기 문화사 연구의 과제에 이 책이 기여하는 점을 다루었다. 이 책은 ‘다면적 정체성’을 적극적인 해석의 대상으로 설정하고, ‘작가’라는 정체성에 의해 차폐되었던 최승일의 다양한 미디어 실천을 장의 구성과 세부의 해석에서 규명하고자 하였으며, 생애사 연구의 방법에 기초하여 전통적 작가론과는 다른 질문을 통해 최승일의 생애사 속에 나타난 ‘집단 안에서의 개인의 의식과 규범’을 살피고자 한다. 이를 통해 당대 미디어장의 역학과 식민지 인텔리겐치아의 집단적 행동규범, 인식 속에서 최승일의 생애는 입체적으로 해석된다. 이러한 접근은 일제강점기 문화사 연구에 효과적인 방식으로 주목된다.
