AB - 김향의 저작 『창극의 이면론』은 근대 이행기에 생겨난 이래 오늘날까지 변화와 발전을 거듭한 창극에 관한 연구서이다. 이 저작은 창극을 역사적으로 조망하는 동시에 그 공연 미학까지를 함께 다룬다. 책은 크게, 창극의 탄생부터 1950년대까지 방대한 자료와 연구사를 바탕으로 창극의 역사를 정리한 전반부와, 1960년대 국립창극단 창단 이후 국립창극단의 주요 작품을 분석한 후반부로 나눌 수 있다. 서평은 이 책의 장별로 주요 논점을 살펴보면서 이 책이 창극 연구에 이바지하는 점과 함께 몇 가지 의문점도 논평하였다. 이면론은 이 책의 중요한 핵심으로서, 저자는 판소리 이면론을 창극에 가져와서 창극만의 미학을 밝히고자 하였으며, 그럼으로써 오페라나 뮤지컬과 같은 타 음악극 장르와 창극의 차이가 창극의 뿌리인 판소리에 있음을 분명히 하였다. 이러한 이면론을 바탕으로 한 창극 공연에 대한 꼼꼼한 독해는 이 책의 가치를 충분히 말해주고 있다.
