ABSTRACT

This study focuses on how Kim Myung-hwa employs the liminal qualities of food to represent various discourses while also opening up points of excess. It examines First Birthday, Cafe Shinpa, The Fall of Wanggung Restaurant, and Chimhyang. First, This study explores how she represents discourses surrounding food culture and how these discourses contribute to the construction of characters’ identities. The representation of food consumption reveals commodity fetishism and class stratification inherent in the market economy. The depiction of cooking and eating practices exposes how women’s behavioral norms and bodies are shaped within a patriarchal order. The representation of traditional cuisine demonstrates how nostalgia grounded in motherhood constructs national identity. These discourses are destabilized through violations of food-related norms and the contamination of food itself. Through the carnivalesque and the abject, Kim Myung-hwa enables dynamic possibilities of transformation at both the individual and social levels.
