ABSTRACT

This paper reads The Silenced through the lens of crip theory, revisiting its ending—which existing scholarship has interpreted as foreclosed by Juran's death—as an ethical text that, through the new interpretive framework of queer-crip temporality, calls on audiences to think other futures within history. To this end, this paper reads Juran as a queer supercrip set against the white, heterosexual, male supercrip heroes, and illuminates the headmistress as a mad scientist who exceeds imperial norms, and a queer mother who desires queer reproduction. It then reads Juran as a freak-monster and an agent of ability trouble, moving through a queer and crip reading that goes beyond the conventions of hateful representation surrounding disability and queerness. Through a queer and crip reading, this paper read Juran who strikes back against the headmistress's curative violence—which has erased crip existence and the present—and thereby unfolds folded temporalities. Finally, this paper articulates queer-crip temporality as a new framework by bringing together Alison Kafer's crip time and Elizabeth Freeman's queer temporality. Through this framework, the paper situates The Silenced as an ethical text that critically illuminates the chrononormativity forged by the conjunction of compulsory heterosexuality and compulsory able-bodiedness, invokes a history of violence, and enables us to rethink the present in order to more actively imagine other futures for queer and crip existence. Furthermore, this paper illuminates The Silenced as a text that harbors the possibility of composing, going forward, queer and crip stories that have been absent in the present field of representation.
