AB - 오영미의 『스크린 뒤의 이야기꾼들』(푸른사상, 2026)은 한국영화 시나리오 작가론 연구이자 한국 극문학사·영화사의 서술을 새롭게 모색한 저작이다. 희곡과 시나리오를 비롯해 한국 극문학 연구에 천착해온 저자가 2011년부터 최근 2025년까지 발표한 총 14편의 한국영화 시나리오 및 작가론 연구를 모은 결과물인 이 책의 제목은 시나리오 작가를 ‘이야기꾼’이자 스크린 ‘뒤의’ 존재로 명명한다. 이것은 그동안 한국영화(사) 연구에서 시나리오 텍스트와 작가가 상대적으로 주목받지 못했음을 의미한다. 이 책은 시나리오 작가론과 통사적 접근을 교차시키면서, 저자가 목표로 하는 텍스트와 작가의 서사 생산 조건, 미학적 실천, 산업 내 위치를 다각적으로 고찰한다.
이 책이 갖는 학술적 의의는 크게 다음과 같이 정리된다. 첫째, 영화 시나리오 작품론과 작가론 연구를 체계화했다는 점에 있다. 이를 토대로 저자는 그동안 배우 혹은 감독의 영역에서 주로 평가되던 인물들을 또 다른 창작주체인 ‘시나리오 작가’로 조명함으로써 이들의 역할과 위상을 새롭게 위치시킨다. 이러한 접근은 그간 몇몇 대표작과 일부 작품론에 근거한 기존의 영화사적 평가와 서술에서 시야를 넓힌 새로운 이해를 보여주고 있다.
둘째, 이 책은 시나리오 텍스트와 작가 연구의 다양한 방법론을 제시하며 관련 연구의 지형을 넓히고 있다. 이 책에서 논의되는 시나리오와 작가들을 관통하는 핵심 키워드는 기술적 전환, 매체의 이동과 그에 따른 창작 전략, 이론과 창작의 상관성, 문학적 각색과 문예적 특성, 순수예술과 대중예술의 길항으로 나타나는 문학성과 예술성, 검열로 대표되는 제도적 조건 등으로 집약된다. 저자는 이를 바탕으로 시나리오 텍스트와 작가(성)의 복합적인 성격을 이를 둘러싼 다양한 컨텍스트(context)와의 관계 속에서 규명한다.
결과적으로 스크린 ‘뒤의’ 존재였던 시나리오 작가들의 궤적을 학술적 차원에서 접근한 이 책의 시도는 그동안 주목되지 못했던 시나리오 작가와 작품세계를 재조명하는 동시에 한국영화사의 공백을 보완하는 새로운 이해와 서술 가능성을 제시하고 있다.
