ABSTRACT

This study examined the role of East and West German residents in the process of German unification. German politics pursued East-West German unification for the Gesellschaft, for economic development and social benefits, but East-West German residents have been working to restore Gemeinschaft for this. In this paper, after 40 years of division, German unification has the form of absorption unification of West Germany to East Germany externally, but it emphasizes that it is going through the process of restoration of Gemeinschaft of East and West German residents internally. This study examined the migration and exchange situation between East and West Germany during the division period and analyzed the process of German restoration of Gemeinschaft through the formation of identity of East German residents during the post-unification period.
