ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to find out the implications and development of low-yield nuclear weapons in the US to enhance the reliability of extended deterrence. It is necessary to devise practical countermeasures to the nuclear threat of NK, which has emerged as a de facto nuclear power. However, there are limits to responding to NK nuclear weapons with conventional power, and the reliability of extended deterrence due to the nuclear taboo is questioned. It is necessary to clarify the meaning of low-yield nuclear weapons in terms of enhancing the US's ability to execute extended deterrence and actively seek ways to strengthen South Korea's deterrence and response capabilities. Therefore, the ROK and the US should enhance their expansion deterrence strategy and reliability. It should be upgraded to a nuclear alliance like NATO's nuclear sharing, and the development of the high-level nuclear planning group.
