ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to experiment the feasibility of using the Sand Mould Casting Method(鑄物砂鑄造法) in order to cast movable metal types. The procedures of this research and its major findings are as follows ; (1) First, using the sand mold casting method, the prototypes of characters were casted, and inserted in the sand mold to form a matrix. Passages through which melted alloy of copper and tin were poured to cast movable types were also made. It was experimented to see whether to be able to cast movable metal types with this method, and observe several points to consider during this procedure.(2) Through the whole process of this casting method, various conditions on a component ratio of various metals in making alloys, conditions of the sand mold, temperatures, variances in length and thickness of passages, were tested and reviewed.(3) By examining the extant movable metal print books published in the Joseon Period, an attempt was made to figure out the relationship between the sizes and shapes of characters and the typesetting method, through the analysis of the border of typefaces, the borderlines(界線) on the page, etc.
