Daebanggwangbul-Hwaeomgyeongso consisting of 120 volumes organized by Jìng yuán (1011∼1088) is a annotation book about the Avatamska Sutra. He added a small supplement to annotation of Ch’eng kuan (738∼839). A Goryeo Buddhist monk named Daegak Guksa Uicheon (1055∼1101) asked Jìng yuán for Daebanggwangbul-Hwaeomgyeongso during China’s Sung Dynasty. Before long, he received about 2,900 wood blocks. There was no need engrave because the wood blocks existed in the country during the Goryeo Dynasty. However King Sejong of the Joseon Dynasty bestowed these 2,900 wood blocks to Japan instead of the Tripitaka Koreana. Since then, Daebanggwangbul-Hwaeomgyeongso was published by Cheonggyesa Temple, Gwijinsa Temple, Yongboksa Temple and Songgwangsa Temple in Korea from 15th century to 17th century. Besides several books stored in statue of the Buddha in Baekyangsa Temple was published by unknown publisher in the late 15th century. In this paper, I have researched systems and characteristics of the wood blocks engraved by Songgwangsa Temple. Through this study, I was able to understand the whole process of engraving and characteristics of the wood blocks published by Songgwangsa Temple.

This study bibliographically examines wooden strips documents and Analects of Confucius excavated in Korea. Compared to China and Japan, number of excavated wooden tablets of Korea is very limited. However, with emergence of various types and fields of wooden tablets, it became possible to secure a large amount of historically valuable data. In Chapter 2, the wooden tablets documents were explored as receiving documents, repository documents and draft documents to examine the value of the data as a recorder. In Chapter 3, the value and significance of index wooden tablets were carefully analyzed. Metadata analysis was also conducted on the documents. In Chapter 4, bibliographical approach was taken to Analects of Confucius (Noneo) which already possess an element of a book through the forms of wooden and bamboo tablets.

The aim of this thesis is to explore some aspects of the publication and the historical meaning of the publishing and cultural history of 68 volumes of collections of works printed by wooden movable-type at Haman county area in Gyeongnam Province. First of all, the history of Haman, the figures of Haman, the Confucian Academy and the printing woodblocks of Haman were investigated to examine the social and cultural background of the publishing. The author analyzed type of collections of works, their birth year and the family name of the author, the place and the year of the publication, and the printers of these different 68 kinds of the collections of works. The results are as follows: The collections of works demonstrate their forefathers’ academic competencies. The types of collections of works were divided into 3 types, Munjip(文集), Yujip(遺集), and Silgi(實記). Of the collections of works 60% were Munjip. The authors were local intellectuals. Of these authors 44% of authors were born in the 19th century. Twenty-one lineage groups published collections of works at Hamam area. Seventy-five percent of the publications were published from 1900 to 1949. In terms of place, most collections of works were published in the worshipping halls for their ancestors. Forty-seven percent of the collections of works were published within 100 years after the author had died. Of these 86% of the book printers were from Haman area. If the results of this study are compared with studies in nearby areas such as Uiryeong, Jinjoo, it is expected that the uniqueness of the Haman area will be revealed more clearly.
