ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research is to investigate from a physical bibliographical point of view the characteristics of individual copies of the existing ≪The first Tripitaka Koreana(初雕大藏經)≫, first published in the 11th century. In this research, with a special focus on the collection, distribution and transmission of ≪Tripitaka≫, it was examined that how and why in the 17th century they were transferred from Zen-so Ji(禪昌寺) to Nan-Zen Ji(南禪寺) in Kyoto(京都), Japan.. which currently holds over 5,600 copies, the largest collection of ≪The first Tripitaka Koreana≫. To analyze the physical characteristics and contents of individual copies, not only ≪The first Tripitaka Koreana≫, but also ≪The second Tripitaka Koreana≫, various publications by Buddhist temples, and sutra-copies produced in the Goryeo Dynasty, and held together at Nan-Zen Ji, were extensively examined.
