ABSTRACT

This study arranged the structural characteristics of Cheoncheongmungyeong (Devatāsūtra), a Buddhist scripture, examined its system and analyzed the existing bibliography by comparing the text of Dunhuang(敦煌) Copy with Chinese-translation of Daejanggyeong(complete collection of Buddhist Scriptures). Cheoncheongmungyeong is one of the scriptures of Eighteen Schools of India imported by Xuanjiang(玄奬) from ancient India in 645 A.D. and translated into 582 Chinese characters in 648 A.D. This scripture was translated for the purpose of delivering the practical Buddhism doctrines, that is, teaching of Buddhist commandments and almsgiving. The structure of its text shows the repetition of the same terms, and many of its contents are the same with those of Chulyogyeong(出曜經) and Japahamgyeong(雜阿含經). All the Dunhuang(敦煌) copies of Cheoncheongmungyeong, disclosed up to now, are manuscripts. They were bound together with other short scriptures which prayed for the happiness of the dead and the longevity and fortunes of the living persons. The printing types and contents of Daejanggyeong were compared with those of the first and the second editions of Tripitaka Koreana(高麗大藏經)and the Qishazang(磧砂藏) of China. This study found that the first-carved edition was carved, based on Gaebochikpan Daejanggyeong(開寶勅版大藏經) and the second-carved edition was re-carved on the basis of its first-carved edition. Three kinds of Cheoncheongmungyeong-so, which is the annotations of Cheoncheongmungyeong, were found up to now. Particularly, Sin 316(新316) is the annotation for the writing model recorded in Sinpyeon jejonggyojang chongrok(新編諸宗教藏總錄) of Ueicheon in the Goryeo Period. Cheoncheongmungyeong-byeon of Sa 1397(斯1397號) was not Bianwen(變文), but the transcription of the text quotations(榜題) on the wall paintings which illustrated the contents of Cheoncheongmungyeong.
