The Study of the Base Book and Engravings of the Woodcuts of Eojebijanggeon, the First Tripitaka Koreana

ABSTRACT

The existing theory for Eojebijanggeon which is in the First Tripitaka Koreana is that it was based on Eojebijanggeon, the Tripitaka Kaibao in Buk-Song(北宋), but completed by adding the originality and improving its weak points. Compared with the woodcut of Eojebijanggeon, the Tripitaka Kaibao, it has been recognized as an invaluable material which helps assume the style of landscape painting in the early Goryeo Period. The study presents a new perspective, different from the existing viewpoints, on on the base book and publication for the woodcut of Eojebijanggeon, the First Tripitaka Koreana. This study compares in detail and overall the woodcuts of Eojebijanggeon, the First Tripitaka Koreana with the four woodcuts in the thirteen volume of Eojebijanggeon, the Tripitaka Kaibao. As a result, it is found that the woodcuts of Eojebijanggeon, the First Tripitaka Koreana were engraved, using the woodcuts of Eojebijanggeon, the Tripitaka Kaibao. as their base. The result of this study, therefore, could confirm the need for reexamining the existing theories and research findings on the woodcuts of Eojebijanggeon, the First Tripitaka Koreana.
