The Types and Use of Blue-series Color Paper

ABSTRACT

This is the study about types and use of Blue-series Color Paper which is the most important and frequently used among colored paper in Korea. This study is summarized as follows. (1) Blue-series Color Paper is believed to already exist during the Three Kingdoms period, and most produced in the Goryeo period. (2) Although Blue-series Color Paper ranked rather low among various papers, it was a quite excellent paper with such qualities of low discoloration and high insect-resistance. Since Goryeo Dynasty, Yellow-series color paper ranked the highest, followed by Red-series paper, and Blue-series paper ranked the lowest. (3) Blue-series paper included 12 kinds, and were mostly used for copying Buddhist scriptures. The most frequently used Blue-series Color Paper is Achongji, also called Chungjaji or Chuiji in the Goryeo Dynasty. It is also used for book covers, wall papers and a tribute to China. (4) The main dye of Blue-series Color Paper is Indigo. Common Dayflower and Veridigris were also used and Amur cork tree, yellow dye, was added to Indigo for complex dyeing.
