A Study on the Publications of Jeon1a-Do in the Earlier Period of the Joseon Dynasty: (1) Especially about Jeonnam Region

ABSTRACT

This study is to grasp the publication trend of Jeonnam area in the earlier period of the Joseon Dynasty(before the Hideyoshi's Invasion of Korea in 1592) through the analysis of the subjects, dates and places of publication, and authors. Major findings of the analysis are as follows:There were 156 kinds of books printed in Jeonnam region. Most books were actively published since the years of King Myungjong(明宗). Also the publication records of books remained currently evidence that most were the regional government publications(官版本). Among prominent authors were Ju Hee(주희), Kim Anguk(김안국), Yi Jeong(이정), Yi Hwang(이황), and several famous scholars of those days. Gwangju, Naju, Suncheon, Nungseong, Damyang, which the centers of regional administration, were also the main places of publication. The analysis of their subjects shows that the number of books classified is in the order of the Confucianism(유가류), anthologies(별집류), the educational books for children(소학류), the books of arts(예술류), biographies(전기류), medical science(의가류), the Confucious classics(사서류), the books of courtesy(예류), and military science(병가류).
