ABSTRACT

This study addressed two major research issues. One was to review the reading behavior of female readers, the major book purchasers in Korea. The other was to analyze the types and characteristic features of women-related books and their influences on Korean society. The analysis revealed that Korean female readers bought 5 types of books much more than other books. Those books were related with self-development, gender issues, education for children, motherhood, and superwoman stories. It was found that these books provided women with a set of information useful for their success and self-development as well as specialized tastes and hobbies. Some books introduced invaluable practical methods of rearing successful children and functioning well as family members by emphasizing the importance of education for children and family, especially motherhood. On the basis of these findings, it could be maintained that books targeting female readers made a considerable contribution to bringing into attention a wide spectrum of female issues in Korean society.
